The Opportunity

The CZ Gen Epi project at CZI is building a web-based tool that allows public health departments and researchers worldwide track outbreaks of COVID-19 in their communities, identify which variants are active, and detect new variants that may arise. The software is being developed at CZI in a public open source repository and is free for use by anyone, with the goal of making this capability available in underserved communities as easily as it is anywhere.

CZ Gen Epi, launched in summer of 2021, is gaining traction with California local departments of public health (DPH) and in late 2021 and 2022 we’re expanding to other DPHs outside of California. In 2022, we will be expanding its use to a geographically wider audience, streamlining the workflows (making it easier to use), and creatively adding ways to help users understand and interpret their results.

You will

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the CZ Gen Epi team, a team of five engineers building the genomic epidemiology project:
    • Manage the sprint process
    • Provide mentoring and career planning for the individual contributors
    • Work with Product Management to define and communicate the short-term and long-term goals of the project, and to develop the product roadmap.
    • Ensure engineering excellence in terms of product quality, performance, and security.
    • Be the hiring manager point of contact with recruiting for new positions.

You have

  • Seven or more years working in software development teams and three or more years as an engineering manager.
  • Experience with modern web technologies ideally having data visualizations.
  • The ability to motivate and coach a group of individual contributors with varying levels of experience.
  • The technical background to enable you to contribute to the software design discussions and decisions.

CZI believes that vaccines are one of the most powerful tools to fight COVID-19 and save lives. It aligns to our mission and work to cure, manage, and prevent disease. Proof of completed COVID-19 vaccination will be required for all employees (with the exception of reasonable accommodations due to medical or religious beliefs). All applicants coming onsite to a CZI facility are required to show proof of COVID vaccination or take an onsite COVID test.
