Electrical & Instrumentation Group Leader

PTAG is currently seeking an Electrical & Instrumentation Group Leader. The incumbent will be responsible for managing the E&I team, consisting of Power & Controls and Instrumentation groups, and oversee preparation of engineering designs and related documents. Extensive knowledge of electrical and automation systems for industrial applications is required. As the E&I lead on large projects, the incumbent will oversee the activities of other engineers and project team members as well foster and grow strong relationships with clients.

  • Oversee the day-to-day activities of the E&I team
  • Supervise the quality of engineering drawings and documentations for E&I team
  • Mentor a team of engineers and designers
  • Contribute to the development of the engineering proposals
  • Interact with project managers, suppliers, clients and contractors
  • Conduct meetings with clients and contractors
  • Complete projects on time and within budget
  • Ensure that engineering design specifications are as per contract requirements
  • Implement power studies and prepare electrical engineering and design for industrial plants and processes including medium & low voltage power distribution, motor control centers, power and control schemes, single line diagrams, process control systems, PLC and HMIs, instrumentation, equipment and cable tray layouts, cable schedules, cable and conduit routings, and grounding and lighting layouts
  • Troubleshoot electrical and Instrumentation/Controls issues
  • Provide support to contractors during construction and commissioning


  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Minimum 15 years of experience in an industrial design, plant and/or construction environment
  • Proven leadership skills and ability to collaborate with team members in a multi-disciplined environment
  • Excellent communication skills (interpersonal and written) and proven leadership skills and ability to collaborate with team members and interface with clients in a multi-disciplined environment
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in the province of British Columbia required. Registration in other provinces/territories is also preferred
  • Technical competence and strong attention to detail
  • A thorough understanding of power related studies (Load Flow, Power Factor Correction, Protective Device Coordination, Short Circuit, Arc Flash, and Ground Grid, as a minimum)
  • Proficient in engineering software applications such as database tools, AutoCAD, EasyPower and/or ETAP
  • Knowledge of all electrical and controls design areas including high voltage substations, e-houses, utility interfaces, power distribution, system studies, electrical services, control systems, variable frequency drives, PLC, DCS, HMI systems
  • Preference will be given to candidates who have experience in the Mining Sector
  • Thorough understanding of Canadian codes and standards, mining code, governing regulations and industry practices
  • Project engineering experience and working knowledge of NEC are assets
