The Hydrologic Researcher will monitor water flows, and levels, and will collect borehole geophysical logs, surface geophysical measurements, rock samples or core, water samples, and water levels

Job Requirements :

Essential Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Will correct, process, quality assure, store and archive the collected data and prepare rock samples for petrographic, stratigraphic, and geochemical analysis
  • Analyze hydrologic, geophysical, geochemical, or chemical data and aid in the creation information products such as maps or hydro-stratigraphic cross sections, and to write sections of reports
  • Fieldwork :
  • Operation and maintenance of instrumentation used to monitor water flows, and levels.
  • Collection of water samples and water levels
  • Collection of borehole geophysical logs, surface geophysical measurements, rock samples or core
  • Office work :
  • Processing, correction and quality assurance of hydrologic and geologic data archival and publication of data
  • Analysis of these data to create information products such as maps or hydro-stratigraphic cross sections
  • Writing sections of reports and development of presentation materials using standard word-processing, spreadsheet, and graphics programs
  • Laboratory work
  • Preparation of rock and core samples for analysis, including cutting, cleaning, photographing core, staining, drying rock cuttings, and shipping and receiving for example thin sections
  • Preparing and shipping samples to federal client laboratories; and photographing core or thin sections
  • Technical Requirements :
  • On-the job and formal training will be provided as needed. The successful Researcher will be expected to advance rapidly to being able to work independently
  • Contributions to reports will range in complexity. Expected to work towards being more proficient in the development of presentations, information products, or parts of reports concerning hydrologic and geologic examinations.
  • Supervisory / Management Authority :

  • This position does not have management authority or supervisory capacity
  • Education and / or Experience :

  • A bachelor’s degree in Physical or Natural Science, or engineering with a concentration of at least 30 semester hours in any combination of courses in hydrology or other courses that are relative to the requirements
  • A minimum of at least 6 semester hours in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours in physics are required
  • Experience with the oversight and documentation of drilling operations as well as the collection and processing of rock and sediment cores are skills that are preferred
  • Experience with the collection hydrologic data and maintaining water quality and water level sensors
  • Experience and / or use of analytical software to including : Well cad, ArcGIS, Adobe Acrobat, Ultra edit, Corel Draw or Adobe Illustrator and Corpscon are strongly desired
  • Experience with Hydrological research is required
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :

  • Knowledge of data collection and processing borehole geophysical log data are strongly desired
  • Collection and processing of data from surface geophysical surveys as well as water samples, preparation of samples for the laboratory
  • Ability to trouble shooting, perform minor maintenance, and repair of mechanical or electrical equipment Operation of small power, and non-powered boats.
  • Collection and processing borehole geophysical log data.
  • Oversight and documentation of drilling operations.
  • Collection and processing of rock and sediment cores as well as the collection of hydrologic data and maintaining water quality and water level sensors.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team and have excellent communication skills; both oral and written are a must
  • Proficient in the use of computers and basic computer software to include MS Office Suite
  • The ability to safely operate power tools such as table saws and drills
  • Work around heavy equipment such as drill rigs, bridges and over water, and from a boats
  • An active U.S. driver’s License and a clear driving record
  • Must pass a drug screen and federal background check
  • Work Environment :

  • Work is performed in a federal office setting as well as outdoors in remote locations
  • Exposure to extreme environmental conditions in to include : high temperatures, humidity, and precipitation, sometimes near freezing conditions, as well possible exposure to wildlife of that area
