The professorship “Digital City Science” at HCU researches digital technologies for urban andmetropolitan development. Our interdisciplinary team develops innovative instruments for theanalysis and planning of complex urban systems and brings together expertise inarchitecture, urban and spatial planning, IT, media technology, etc. for this purpose. Tech Lead in the Digital City Science Group

Within the Digital City Science group, you take the role of a „Lead Technologist” who
supervises, consults, and cross-connects the ongoing research and innovation projects.

We create digital and tangible tools in the realm of data-driven city planning.

Our projects support planners and public participation processes through interactive map-based simulations on sustainable urban development, data-dashboards and administration cockpits. We are developing physical tables with tangible urban models to host collective workshops with planners and the public.

Technologies used: Python and Java for backend technologies (simulation modules, object recognition, web-server) and JavaScript Frameworks (e.g. Vue.JS, Mapbox, Leaflet) or Unity for Front-End Applications.

Your Role

Within the Digital City Science group, you take the role of a „Lead Technologist” who
supervises, consults, and cross-connects the ongoing research and innovation projects.

You work in a cross-cutting manner across the various research and innovation endeavors
and fuel them with own creative ideas. A central aspect of your work is the generation of new challenging research ventures, which may also support your PhD work.

You work on the intersection between Software- and IT experts  on the one hand, and city scientists and urban planners on the other. Beyond HCU, you will connect to other IT and computer science
departments in Hamburg and beyond, and cooperate with an international network of
urban data scientists in various research projects.

Also you transfer your experience and knowledge in academic teaching to students, thus training the next generation of Digital City Scientists.

Requirements

  •  A scientific degree (Diploma, Master or similar) in Computer Science, Software Development, Media Technology, Geoinformatics or disciplines with a thematic relation to Digital City Science (e.g. Urban Development, Architecture)
  • Good knowledge in software development and work experience with software development teams
  • Good understanding of the software and IT systems commonly used in the context of urban development, programming languages like Java, JavaScript, Python GIS based tools.
  • Interest in the ongoing development of BIM / CIM, GIS, and Digital Twins
  • Basic familiarity with IoT / CPS technologies commonly used in the urban context
