Our entry level direct care role provides mentoring opportunities to the patients/residents within our care. What about our program you ask? Well…let’s learn a little bit more about IDD/ASD. We serve children and adolescent males ages 6-21 who have mental health related disorders that are co-morbid with Intellectual Disabilities and Autism Spectrum Disorders. Along with the symptomology of the stated disorders, comes the child's issues with maintaining physical safety, proper social skills, use of coping mechanisms, controlling emotions, understanding and coping with trauma, appropriately and independently. They require assistance across multiple domains of treatment. We serve them comprehensively in a medical, clinical and behavioral model.
We provide a caring, supportive and educational environment for children across many domains, from educating them and assisting them in gaining independence in areas including but not limited to activities of daily living, proper hygiene, effectively managing their emotions, effectively communicating their wants and needs (in multiple ways-through PECS, Sign language, verbal methods-pending their functioning level). We actively teach, role-play and model effective use of coping mechanisms, provide emotional support, and teach them how to function within a routine/structured environment, and actively assist them in transferring those skills into their homes and into the community.

Unit Specific Performance Objectives
1.Document the observations of the individual interventions, and responses in progress notes.
2.Involves family in treatment during visiting hours and telephone contacts, reporting outcome to the treatment team staff/Shift Supervisor or Program Manager daily.
3.Identifies and acts to prevent potential crisis situations and appropriately manage individual.
4.Communicates well by reporting incidents and areas of concern of the individual and unit environment to the RN and supervisory staff on the unit.
5.Maintains a safe environment by performing contraband checks, orienting the individual to safety rules and adhering to all Southwood Hospital safety policies. Checks/inspects the individual's personal bins daily.
6.Transport the individual as needed to the emergency room or medical and dental appointments as needed and as required.
7.Assist in community meetings and groups if necessary.
8.Monitors cleanliness of unit, reporting any maintenance variances to the Shift Supervisor or Program Manager.
9.Utilizes a positive, growth-oriented, and problem solving approach with individuals, staff, and management.
10.Demonstrates an understanding of normal growth and developmental stages of children and adolescents, and initiates appropriate treatment based upon their needs.
11.Demonstrates an understanding of interventions and supportive interaction, and perform these under the direction of RN and supervisory staff or management staff.
12.Performs other duties as required.
1. A high school diploma (or equivalent) with two years of clinical/related experience preferred* or A bachelors degree in mental health or equivalent college level coursework, or experience working in a mental health facility or with MH/IDD/ASD individuals. *(In the event that a direct care worker only possesses a high school diploma (or equivalent), s/he will be required to complete additional training during orientation to prepare for the milieu environment.)
2.Knowledge of group dynamics preferred.
3Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) certification must be maintained to include annual refresher.
4.CPR certification renewed bi-annually or upon expiration of certification.
5.Must be knowledgeable of the normal developmental stages and behaviors for age group of assigned individuals.
6.Maintains competence in identified universal, core and critical competencies.
7.Valid PA Act 33/34 clearances
8.Must meet job competencies within 90 days of hire.
