NY, USVP of Data Analytics (Art Market)

Masterworks is the only platform for investing in blue-chip, multi-million dollar artworks. "Contemporary art" (post-WWII) has outperformed the S&P by 150% since 1995. Prior to Masterworks, the only way to allocate to art was to purchase a multi-million dollar painting, making the asset class inaccessible for most investors. The company has over 200,000 investors signed up purchasing shares in primary offerings and trading shares in a secondary market.
Position Overview:
We are seeking a VP of Data Analytics to lead the development of quantitatively-based investment theses around specific art market sub-segments that will guide which paintings for Masterworks' to purchase.
This role will own micro-level analysis into the art market by sub-segments, including artist, series, vintage, example-type, levels, as well as identifying/developing key evaluation metrics.
The role will examine what external factors contribute to price movements and buy/sell signals. The role will be a senior thought leader internally and will work closely with our art acquisitions team.
Responsibilities Overview:
We are seeking an experienced, high-performing individual who will use quantitative methods to understand art market appreciation and returns, thereby identifying buy/sell signals for particular artworks within the Masterworks' investment portfolio.

Responsible for executing research projects to test specific hypotheses on what drives art market returns

Build models and reporting tools to help internal teams understand what segments of the art market are performing the best

Collaborate with our Chief Investment Officer on macro-and cross-asset analysis
Requirements and Preferred Experience:

5-7 years+ experience in data analytics, investment analysis, economics, finance, and/or similar fields

Experience in studying art market structure and analysis

Experience with data science languages (R, Python)

Strong curiosity and interest around what drives returns in the art market
Measurements of Success in First 90 Days:

Complete hiring of the team

Identify 3-5 hypotheses from internal team members at Masterworks about what drives art market returns; create research projects

Identify new data types that need to be collected for analysis
